Week 6 Challenge:

This week's challenge is active...ness. Activeness? The internet says it's a word, so I'm going with it. Earlier this week, I downloaded an app called Move it! by Ryan G Adams. There are several apps on all of the platforms that do what this app does. It uses my phone to tell me when I've been sitting still too long and yells at me to get up and move around. Anything less than 100 steps per hour counts as inactivity. I do a lot of work from my desk and this app kicked my butt this week, so I'm passing the fun on to you. To enter the drawing, you need to monitor your inactivity and move around at least once an hour all week.

What will you win?!

This week's challenge is breakfast. Who doesn't love breakfast?! Apparently, or at least statistically, almost all of us. Skipping breakfast has been proven to be detrimental to our weight loss endeavors. Breakfast starts our bodies on a daily mission of calorie burning. It regulates our metabolism and generally keeps us in a good mood. Entering the drawing this week is easy. You just need to eat Breakfast every day. Simple enough, right?

Week 4 Challenge:

This week's challenge is cross-training. Last week seems to have kicked a lot of us on our butts. The sun is out and school is ending. Summer is about to begin and the last thing we want to do is diet and exercise. This challenge is about renewing your conviction by starting a new routine or varying the exercise strategy you already have. You can enter your name in the drawing if you do one of the following everyday this week:

  1. Switch to different activities: Does the stair-stepper in the left corner of the gym have your name on it? Next time, head to the rowing machine. Sneak into a step class. Try something new.
  2. Vary how you train: If you walk regularly, some days you can walk slowly over a long distance, and other days you may want to alternate walking and jogging. Other days you may want to focus on walking a mile as fast as possible. You can also utilize items in the environment to get you working harder: If you see steps, walk up and down them, walk backwards and sideways, walk up hills, and so on.
  3. Splice same-old, same-old workouts: Instead of one long run, insert some stair climbing every time you run past a stairway. Or if you're in the park, do step-ups on every fifth park bench you see. Get off that stationary bike midway and run for five minutes on the treadmill.
  4. Try different moves with different tools: You don't have to use the same set of dumbbells all the time. A new wave of resistance equipment is flooding the gyms, giving you hundreds of more ways to do the same old exercises. Use stability balls, weighted medicine balls, exercise bands, balance boards, a step, barbells, weighted vests, and so on.
  5. Up the ante: Push yourself a little bit harder than usual: Run faster, increase the weight you lift or the number of sets you do, perform a more difficult version of an exercise, pair up exercises together to superset, or change the order of the exercises you do in a session.

What will you win?!

  • Steps 0-99,999
  • Distance (Preset Stride)
  • Calories
  • 98% Accuracy

Week 3 Challenge:

This week's challenge is water. That's right, drinking water. It's an amazing fact that we statistically are not drinking enough water daily to stave off the effects of kidney stones, gastrointestinal and urinary tract cancer, not to mention slow metabolisms and increased appetites and severe mood swings. Read more at Health.com
It is recommended that you drink 6 to 8 cups of water every day. Do that and you'll be able to enter the drawing.

Week 2 Challenge:

This week's challenge is exercise. Losing weight, as we know, is all about input and output. Last week's nutrition challenge organized your input, the foods you eat. This week, we'll focus on your output, the energy you use to accomplish things.
You will be able to enter the drawing if you exercise while maintaining an elevated heart rate for at least 10 minutes each of at least 6 days.
There are a billion ways to track the exercise that you do. I personally use Endomondo, but find a fitness tracker that works for you.

Spring 2015- Official Rules

::Click Here to Register::

The rules of this year's competition are as follows:

On Saturday, April 4th, All participants will meet at 14268 Side Hill Ln, Draper, UT for a casual come and go Kick-Off Party from 9am-11am. At the party, we will be taking "Before" pictures and establishing starting weight for everyone in the competition. Both the pictures and the weights will be kept completely confidential.

Every Saturday morning thereafter for the next 12 weeks, all local participants will meet again at the Bowe residence between 9am and 11am to weigh in. All results will be calculated against each participant's starting weight producing a percentage of total weight lost week to week. These percentages will be ranked and the top ten "Losers" will be posted on this blog each Sunday morning.

The entry fee is $50 and can be paid in person or you can send the money via Square Cash payable to cash.me/$MatthewBowe. This money will be saved throughout the duration of the competition and used entirely for prizes to the participants. $50 has proven to be just steep enough to keep most competitors motivated and engaged for 12 weeks. There are plenty of prizes to win, but even if you don't win any money, you'll be skinnier, healthier, happier and hopefully have several new like-minded friends. In the many times we've hosted this event, every single active participant lost weight.

Weigh-ins will NOT be accepted after 11am.

Weekly Challenges

Each week, along with the top ten results, I will issue a challenge for the week. Those who successfully complete the challenge will be allowed to enter their name in a drawing for a prize. These challenges are usually quite simple and require little to no extra time to complete.

DIET AND EXERCISE ONLY PLEASE. To keep a level playing field for all competitors, use of weight-loss aiding drugs or extreme diets is not permitted.

Prizes

The final weigh-in and Prize Giveaway Party will be held at the Bowe residence from 9am-11am on Saturday, June 27th. Final prize amounts are percentages of the entry fees and entirely depend on how many people join the competition. The more, the merrier.
The First Place Winner will receive 40%. With a goal of 25 participants, this prize would be $500The Second Place Winner will receive 25% and the Third Place Winner will receive 15%. In addition, a 10% participation prize will be drawn from names of competitors who missed no more than 2 weigh-ins. The remaining 10% of the entry fees will be used to purchase the weekly prizes.

As we go on, I will also inform everyone of exercise groups, cooking get-together's, etc (if anyone is interested). If you have an idea of something you'd like to do with a group, let me know and I will get the word out.

Thank you to everyone that is joining in on this competition and GOOD LUCK!!
